Many people passed, but never did one person stop. The next day I decided to go back to the park, curious to see if the little girl would still be there. Right in the very spot as she was yesterday, she sat with the saddest look in her eyes. Today I was to make my own move and walk over to the little girl. As we all know, a park full of strange people is not a place for young children to play alone. ?? As I began walking towards her, I could see the back of the little girl’s dress indicated a deformity(畸形). I smiled to let her know it was okay, I was there to help, to talk. I sat down beside her and opened with a simple “Hello”. I smiled and she shyly smiled back. We talked until darkness fell and the park was completely empty. I asked the girl why she was so sad. The little girl looked at me and with a sad face said, “Because I’m different.” ?? I immediately said “That you are!” and smiled. The little girl acted even sadder. She said, “I know.” She looked at me and smiled. Slowly she stood to her feet, and said, “Really?” ?? “Yes, dear, you’re like a little guardian angel sent to watch over all those people walking by.” She nodded her head “yes” and smiled, and with that she spread her wings and said with a twinkle in her eye, “I am. I’m your guardian angel.” ?? I was speechless, sure I was seeing things. She said, “For once you thought of someone other than yourself, my job here is done.” ?? Immediately I stood to my feet and said, “Wait, so why did no one stop to help an angel!?” She looked at me and smiled, “You’re the only one who could see me, and you believe it in your heart.” …and she was gone. ?? You are strong.???? D. You are rich B ?A woman renewing her driver’s license at the County Clerk “What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a …” “Of course I have a job,” said Emily. “I’m a mother.” “We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation… ‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder. One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title. “What is your occupation?” she asked. The words simply popped out. “I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.” The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair. I repeated the title slowly, and then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire. “Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “just what you do in this field?” Coolly, without any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn’t), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.” There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out. As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up (依托) by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants---aged 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6-month-old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable (不可缺少的) to mankind than “just another mother.” Motherhood…What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door. 31. What can we infer from the conversation between the woman and the recorder at the beginning of the passage? A. The woman felt ashamed to admit what her job was. B. The recorder was impatient and rude. C. The author was upset about the situation that mothers faced. D. Motherhood was not recognized and respected as a job by society. 32. How did the female clerk feel at first when the author told her occupation? A. Curious. B. Puzzled. C. Indifferent. D. Interested. 33. How did the author feel when describing her job to the clerk? A. Calm. B. Panic-stricken. C. Confident. D. Proud. 34. Why did the woman clerk show more respect for the author? A. Because the author cared little about rewards. B. Because she admired the author’s research work in the lab. C. Because she thought the author did admirable work. D. Because the writer did something she had little knowledge of. 35. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage? A. To show how you describe your job affects your feelings toward it. B. To argue that motherhood is a worthy career and deserves respect. C. To show that the author had a grander job than Emily. D. To show that being a mother is hard and boring work. C The great white shark is the largest shark and is probably the most well-known and feared shark. The great white shark is gray or bluish above and white below. The largest Great Whites can reach lengths of 22 feet and weigh up to 5,000 pounds. The Great White has massive teeth, which are positioned in rows. When the Great White attacks, it bites its prey and shakes its head back and forth. The serrated teeth act as a saw and literally tear the victim apart. Actually the Great White Shark often swallows many of its own teeth in an attack. Great Whites employ several hunting skills depending on the prey. Most of the time, the shark will remain still underwater before attacking its prey from underneath. In the case of hunting some kinds of seals, the impact of the shark is so powerful that it knocks both the shark and the seal clear out of the water. With larger prey such as elephant seals, the shark will simply take a huge bite out of it and wait for it to bleed to death. When hunting dolphins, the shark will attack from above, to avoid detection from the dolphin’s echolocation. Interestingly, a Great White Shark has never been observed giving birth. However, pregnant females have been caught. The Great White Shark is known to be ovoviviparous. Females give birth to eight or nine pups that are already about five feet in length upon birth, which is different from other egg-laying animals. Despite the fear of Great White Sharks, at least in part generated by Steven Spielberg’s 1975 movie, Jaws, Great White Sharks do not target humans as prey. Most attacks are attributed to mistaken identity. Sharks can easily mistake humans for seals. Many human injuries caused by Great White Sharks are cases of test-biting. If a shark is unsure about a floating object, it often gives it test bite to determine what kind of object it is. While such bites do little damage to buoys(浮标) and other objects, they obviously can cause serious damage on the human body. 36. What does the underlined word “ovoviviparous” mean? A. It refers to animals that lay eggs. B. It refers to animals that do not lay eggs. C. It refers to animals whose young develop in eggs within the mother’s body. D. It refers to animals whose young develop outside the mother’s body 37. Which aspect is not mentioned in the passage? A. Diet B. Appearance C. Reproduction D. Hunting 38. Which of the following is true? A. Great White Sharks have teeth that act like saws. B. Great White Sharks only live up to 40 years. C. Most sharks can reach lengths of 22 feet. D. Most sharks are gray or bluish below and white above. 39. Which of the following can be learned from the passage? A. Great sharks will attack dolphins from above to avoid the dolphins from fighting back. B. Great sharks will bleed to death if they are attacked by larger prey such as elephant seals. C, Great sharks attack human beings because humans are misidentified. D. Great sharks’ attack often causes serious damage on the human beings. 40. Which category does the passage most probably belong to? A. News B. Entertainment C. Nature D. Pets D Millions of people die of hunger in southern Africa every year, but when Zambia was offered thousands of tons of free maize by the US, the government politely said no. “We don’t know whether the food is safe,” said Zambia’s commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Dipak Patel. His worries are shared by countries around the world that are in two minds about America’s genetically modified(GM,转基因的)crops.Just last week, EU(欧盟)member nations were discussing whether or not to import GM sweet corn from the US. Ever since people started farming, they have tried to crossbreed(杂交)plants to make them stronger or better tasting. At one time, only related plants could be crossed with each other. But when GM techniques were developed in the 1970s, scientists were able to put a single gene from a living creature into an unrelated creature. This means they can make crops more productive and resistant to disease by adding genes from other species. They can also create food with special characteristics, such as “golden rice”, which is enriched with vitamin A. But many people believe GM foods are a health risk. At the moment, the official argument is that GM foods “are not likely to present risks for human health”. But there are still many questions to be answered as the foods are produced in different ways. Some experts believe the genetic material added to plants can transfer to humans and give damage to our bodies. Further harm could be caused by the genes from GM plants crossbreeding with naturally produced crops. People in China are also getting worried about GM foods. More than 70 percent of the country’s soybean oil is produced from imported GM soybeans. Meanwhile, an investigation last November found that 12 of 60 famous foods sold across the country were GM products. The government has begun to introduce a marking system for GM goods so that people can choose whether or not to eat them. 41. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Harmful GM foods B. Advantages of GM foods C. GM foods, a health risk? D. the Techniques of GM foods 42. Why has Zambia refused the American free maize? A. they decide to follow EU member’s advice B. they are concerned about the safety of GM foods C. they care little about the problem of starvation D. they are too proud to accept free offer 43. It has been proved that _________. A. GM foods are harmful to people’s health B. GM food is no better than naturally produced foods C. only related plans could be crossed with each other D. GM techniques can increase the production of crops 44. Which of the following statement is TRUE? A. GM foods are a health risk. B. Only Zambia worries about the safety of GM foods . C.
